Sculpture
I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine, a fellow woodcarver
Stephen Hayward.
The Alternative Medium
As a woodcarver, when it comes to large sculptures, there is a frustration in knowing that the piece of timber that you are using is probably not properly seasoned and so the finished piece will probably crack to a greater or lesser extent, depending on its exposure to the elements and how it is cared for. I found this with a couple of 1.5 tonne Lewis Chessmen that I made for Uig on Lewis.
This led me to experiment with a laminated, carved wooden core and a bonded bronze finish to create the works you see in the photo’s. This gives you a stable medium and a finished sculpture that can be displayed inside or out no matter the exposure as you can see with ‘The Mermaid of The North’ who sits by the sea in Balintore Ross-shire.
